Teething
My almost 6 month old seems to be teething. He has woken up crying and was soothed when I put my finger on his gums. He has been chewing everything! My husband and I have been talking about using Tylenol or Orajel and are curious what others have used successfully to soothe a teething baby!

My son just turned 9 months old and already has seven teeth. My son teethes on everything, even when he's not "teething" . He has been chewing everything even before he got his first tooth and it hasn't stopped and he drools a lot. Anyway, I have used Infant Tylenol and Orajel. At first I didn't use them togehter, I'd give him one or the other, now I use both when he seems fussy, since he is already 26 lbs. and it doesn't seem to make him "drowsy" or anything like that. Also, I use the frozen teething rings, which seem to help more than the Orajel, personally. If you're not comfortable using any ointments, try putting a rag or wash cloth in the refrigerator and giving him that to suck on for a while...Good Luck!
Our son just turned six months old yesterday (Feb 2). He does not have any teeth yet. He does show on again and off again signs, like scratching his ear and being fussy. We have been soaking a wash cloth in ice water and giving that to him to suck on. After about five minutes, he is done and restored to his "normal" self.
A nurse from REX told me that frozen stuff is too cold for a little one. So 20-30 mins in the Fridge is better for the teething stuff.
I read one study recently that said that "frequent" use (as defined as more than twice per month) of Tylenol and similar products had been links to Asthma in kids between six and 10 years old.

Acetaminophen for fevers, but not for pain is what I took away from the study.
I've had good experience applying Benadryl topically. You just wet your finger with children's Benadryl and rub it on their gums. I've also heard doing this by mixing the Benadryl with equal part liquid mylanta so that it coats better. You only need as much as will stick on your finger when you dip it in. My son gets instant relief.
Also, be careful because there is Orajel for kids and it may be in a different part of the store than the adult version.

You can also have him chew on a teething biscuit or a very hard, large and salt-free pretzel. Once they are soft/soggy, take it away. Once he is old enough you can also do Ibuprofen.
