Thanksgiving Books for Kids
The great children's book staff over at Quail Ridge Books & Music offers up these mostly Thanksgiving-related books.
The store in Raleigh has a tempting sale this weekend: For Quail Ridge Readers' Club members, the Fall Sale is Friday, 11/7 - Monday, 11/10. Members save 20 percent on most books and merchandise, 15 percent on in-stock CDs.
The Hoboken Chicken Emergency: Discover (or re-discover) this classic by NPR's Daniel
Pinkwater. When the Bobowicz's plan for Thanksgiving turkey falls through, Henrietta (a 266-pound chicken) is the designated stand-in. Relax, Henrietta does not end up as the entree. But what happens next to her, Arthur, and the rest of the Bobowicz family makes for a wild and wacky tale. The cover alone is worth it! To be read to: ages 5 and up/ To read: ages 9 and up.
'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving, by Dav Pilkey: The classic tale is adapted to tell the story of kids who opt for a vegetarian dinner after a trip to a turkey farm. Age 4 to 8.
And a non-holiday themed book:
The Sea Serpent and Me by Dashka Slater ($17, Houghton Mifflin): Here is a charming twist on a favorite idea. A tiny sea serpent drops into the tub, surprising a young bather. She finds him beautiful,
and they splash together, gleefully flooding the room. Of course she has to keep and care for him, and how she does this comprises the drama in this simply perfect picture book. It is one of my favorites of the year. For ages 3-6.
