Things to do in the Summer for free

I am fairly new to North Carolina and I will be having friends comin for a visit in July for a 4 days. What are some things that we can do with them while they are here for almost free or free? Her husband is a history nut, they also have two small kids 4 and 2 years old. I'm looking for something to do around the Triangle area or at least an hour away. We are probably going to the beach at least one day. Any suggestions?

The Natural Sciences Museum and History Museum are both free (though both occasionally have fees for specific exhibits) in downtown Raleigh. The Science Museum is aimed more at kids, but they are next door to each other so it's easy to visit both in one day. Playgrounds are generally a good choice for free, but it can get pretty hot in July. My little ones could probably spend all day just riding the Science Museum's escalators and the giant globe with lights seems to be a kid magnet.
