Triangle-Area MLK Day Events

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Jan. 19 this year. Here are a few ways to mark the day and honor the civil rights leader in the Triangle.

Friday, Jan. 9: Actor Barry Scott recreates some of King's most inspiring speeches at his 11 a.m. show, "A Tribute To Martin Luther King," at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Reservations recommended. Best for third grader and up.

Saturday, Jan. 10: Cary's Dreamfest 2009 is kicked off with a concert by the Fisk Jubilee Singers at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 13: Bright Star Children's Theatre presents The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a 50-minute play best for third graders and up. Show times are at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham.

Jan. 16: At 6 p.m., Raleigh leaders and clergy participate in a wreath laying ceremony at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Gardens.

Jan. 17: At 11 a.m., the Durham Civil Rights Legacy Winter Walking Tour starts in downtown Durham.

Jan. 17: At noon, Durham's Hayti Heritage Center holds its Martin Luther King Raise-a-Reader Book Fair.

Jan. 19: Remember King by volunteering at service projects across the Triangle during the Triangle United Way's Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service. Families, including kids, are encouraged to volunteer.

Jan. 19: The 28th Annual Martin Luther King Memorial March starts at 11 a.m. at the State Capitol building in downtown Raleigh. The march is followed by an ecumenical service at noon at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

Jan. 19: The Martin Luther King Evening Musical Celebration starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts. It features a host of local choirs, including some youth choirs, and musical groups.

Jan. 31: Durham's Martin Luther King Jr. Parade starts at noon and proceeds down Fayetteville Street ending at Fayetteville and Elmira Ave.
