Ohhhhh...this one sounds like fun. If I had to pick a tv mom who I most dressed like....hmmm....maybe Susan on Desperate Housewives? She wears alot of cute casual stuff- jeans and fun tops. My problem is I'm 41, and I hope I dress my age, but I can't help but gravitate towards "younger clothes". I go into places like Talbots, and it feels so old ladyish to me. I like fun stuff, and I really try not to be tacky with stuff that is hipper than I really am:-)

I would have to say that I am like the mom Debra on Everybody loves Raymond, my house is always in chaos, there are always people in and out, in-laws always into everything we do, and I have alot of her attitude about things, I dress alot like her as well comfort is the most important thing and the way it looks come second...so I guess this would be the person that most represents my style

I always think Debra looks cute!

JGBARKER's picture
by JGBARKER 6 mon. ago.

mmm.. ironically enough, i majored in fashion in college, and yet these days--- as a stay at home mom, i NEVER wear makeup, always have my hair up, and wear workout clothes. i can't believe i USED to wear high heels everyday. thank goodness for crocs and sneakers.

i don't watch a lot of grown up tv today, with the exception of lost and the tudors. i wouldn't say my style is of the tudor variety(ok, and i'm glad i'm not married to king henry VIII!)

so i am really unsure WHO i'd say my style is most like. i still try to dress stylish when i go out with hubby, but my boobs are a lot bigger than they used to be- and, well, everything has "moved" since having a child!!!

JasMo's picture
by JasMo 6 mon. ago.

I think, more often than I care to admit, my "style" revolves around making my pajamas appear to be regular clothing. I guess that would make me look most like Allison Dubois from Medium who spends a lot of the show in cute p.j.'s :)

I should stipulate that my children are all school age now. When they were younger and I was at home all day, I wore the typical spit-up-on the shoulder-of my sweatshirt uniform. Now that they are older, I've been able to go back to focusing just a little more on myself. But I did decide after watching Desperate Housewives the other night, I was flattering myself a little to compare my style to Susan's:-)

JasMo's picture
by JasMo 6 mon. ago.

I love this time in my daughter's life, but I'm also looking forward to when she's school age too--I don't think I'll quite know what to do with myself--oh wait, I did "dress" once upon a time...

chs123's picture
by chs123 6 mon. ago.

I have not really seen that many African American moms on tv lately. In the eighties and nineties there was Clair Huxtable, the mom on Family Matters, Jay Kyle from My Wife and Kids. I think the tv mom I can relate to the best is Janet Kyle. We do not have the money they have, but we struggle with making sure we raise our kids the best way we know how without losing our identity in the process. Working and trying to keep yourself up, and take care of your family is a lot of work!

chs123's picture
by chs123 6 mon. ago.

I understand what you are saying about clothes. I have to tell myself that is not appropiate, especially if it something that my daughter can wear. I am 40, and have to remind myself of that. I do think I am tasteful and always dress appropiate for the workplace, church, and other things. But, I don't want to look like a grandma when go out!

JasMo's picture
by JasMo 6 mon. ago.

It is really difficult to keep yourself up in the midst of it all! I struggle with knowing how to balance that--where does the "me" time come in, when there is family, work, and a house to take care of? Can't there be more hours in the day???

I'm lucky enough to get to work from home, but that makes it easy for me to get slouchy when it comes to my looks. I enjoy comfortable, easy-going clothes I can move in, but I don't want to look like I'm wearing a paper bag either (or my pj's!).

yuenglingat's picture
by yuenglingat 6 mon. ago.

Which TV mom do I "want" to dress like or the TV Mom that I "do" dress like?
Well...the TV mom I dress like in the real world has got to be Debra from Everybody loves Raymond....I mean really, going to school full time, two boys..3 and 6...yoga pants and zip up sweatshirts are ideal as pajamas and running to daycare, school, and everything in the middle. Especially great when you are running late.! I have the same workout outfit for everyday of the week. When I shop I can only think of comfort and what's not going to show the "stain" of the day!
The TV mom I would "Like" to dress like would be Susan on Desperate Housewives. I would love some direction on where to shop for jeans that are made to fit a 38yr old mother of two's body instead of jeans that are made for 13yr olds with no hips! I am not heavy by any means(size 6) but who wears those things?

I don't think I have enough room to even start on the hair? Who knew that haircolor does NOT look the same at 38 as it did at 28?

lilybug's picture
by lilybug 6 mon. ago.

I have found jeans at Ann Taylor LOFT to be incredibly great fitting, reasonably priced, well made jeans. Old Navy has cute ones too, very well priced.

yuenglingat's picture
by yuenglingat 6 mon. ago.

Do Old Navy jeans fit well? I have been looking for awhile and the ones I do find all cost about $100.

lilybug's picture
by lilybug 6 mon. ago.

Don't go to department stores! It's ridiculous! Yes, Old Navy has alot of different styles, and they run different lengths, short, average and tall, so it's easy to find something for everyone!

WendyW's picture
by WendyW 6 mon. ago.

Wow - never really thought about this one! Well, I work full time, but my work clothes are biz-casual, so nothing too dressy, but I love to hang out in jeans and a t-shirt and comfy clothes. My son knows the first thing I like to do when I get home is change into my comfy clothes. I guess I can most relate to Lynette Scavo on Desperate Housewives. She seems to have the comfy casual/business thing down pretty good. If only I had her figure!

WendyW's picture
by WendyW 6 mon. ago.

Oh! Here's a description of her style I just came across on www.seenon.com and I think it fits me really well: Lynette’s life is consumed with a barrage of never-ending antics from her children and husband. Always knee-deep in her family’s everyday life, Lynette dresses for comfort, while offering an authoritative and professional composure

briavery's picture
by briavery 6 mon. ago.

Wow... I would love to look more trendy but I have to be comfortable. With teaching in elementary school (on my feet all day) and chasing a 2 year old with sticky fingers, kicks heels and dresses out the window. I would love to have flashier outfits that are stylish but I swear it costs more than it's worth...

lilybug's picture
by lilybug 6 mon. ago.

I NEVER spend a fortune on clothes-it must be on sale...Marshalls is a great place to start.....a cute shirt cost the same as a not cute one! TEE HEE. I was never one of those people that had natural style-you know the type- but as I've gotten older and grown more comfortable in my own skin, I've actually paid MORE attention to what I wear, interestingly enough. I enjoy fun clothes-and truly-you can hit the Goodwill store at the right time and find name brand stuff for pennies. I know it's not always a priority for people, I get it, but I guess I enjoy the process of finding the good deals, so it doesn't seem like work to me.

WendyW's picture
by WendyW 6 mon. ago.

You can find some great deals at department stores! Esp. on the clearance rack. You just have to wait and search sometimes. Belks is one of my favorite places to find deals!

JasMo's picture
by JasMo 6 mon. ago.

I also seem to be able to find a lot of stuff at Macy's--especially the clearance racks and when they have One Day sales. I like Target prices too, but their clothes don't always seem to hold up, and I'm just now realizing that sometimes it is better to buy something pricier up front if it is better quality...then I'm not buying the same t-shirts or tank tops every summer.

Unstyled hair, no make-up and very functional clothes. Sad to see, I think I may be modeling myself on Berta from 2 and 1/2 Men.

nhardyw's picture

As one of the other poster stated, I don't watch much TV except for an occasional reality show. My style varies depending on what I'm doing that day. I'm a stay-at-home Mom, but used to work in the corporate world. My day may be volunteering at school, so I want to dress appropriately with something casual. Or, my day may begin at the Fitness Club and then I might run around with my workout clothes on for half the day. I like to stay current with the styles, however, and when we go out, try to dress "in style". I don't grunge too much, unless working in the yard. It wasn't until the last several years that I've relaxed and now work in the yard without make up! What can I say....I grew up with a Mother that was always put together.

JasMo's picture

What a nice heritage for your mother to leave you!!!

gstevens77's picture

hmmm, I wish I can say which mom best resembles me on tv.... I don't really watch TV that much and the only moms I can recall on tv is Debra and Marie from everybody loves raymond... I can honestly say my mom has Marie's spirit. Then there's Peggy from Married with children... definitely 0% me. That's all I can remember at the moment. OK, so I rarely watch tv shows and I watch rented movies few times a week... Im more attached to the computer than TV. Anyways, if anyone can find a character that's pregnant that only wears sweats, shorts and her husbands tshirt 85% of the time then that's me... I'm always wearing slippers or sandals. I only wear make up on special occasions and that's the only time I wear something other than a tshirt but of course I still wear my slippers or sandals even then. I believe I'm as casual as it gets and I don't believe there's a character on TV like me... so boring.. their rating will plummet.

Berta....now that's funny.

JasMo's picture
by JasMo 6 mon. ago.

Can anyone suggest a good place to get a new purse w/out the department store prices? I currently don't have any bags that aren't being used as diaper bags...and the rare times I get to go out alone, I'd like to carry something cute!

cdcl45's picture

I'd have to say my style is like karen from one tree hill, I try to be stylish w/ what i have. I love fashion, but it's hard to stay in style w/ the prices now.

JasMo-try Kohl's, Marshalls, or TJMaxx

Well, I'm going out on a limb here & must to compare myself to Kate on John & Kate Plus 8.  I know it's a reality show, but so are the days of my life...real. I don't have 8 kids, I only have 3. One set of twins with the quadrupled chance of multiples again, according to the doc. See where I'm going here? Kate is a very busy, overwhelmed woman who, considering her circumstances does a great job running such a large family, which the most important factor. She has perfectionist tendencies which can be overbearing at times, especially to her poor hubby, but she has 8 happy, healthy children & sacrifices self to accomplish this. Her style may not be the most fashionable but it's always appropriate for the moment and she's always well groomed and she finds it important that the kids are too. The most noticeable thing about Kate is that as the kids grow, she is stepping her style up a notch with them. Just as I can now dedicate a little more time to my appearance as my girls become more independent.

stephparry's picture
by stephparry 6 mon. ago.

My style is probably most close to Jennifer Aniston. I am such a casual dresser. I wear jeans and a T-shirt A LOT. I would love to break from this monotony, but can't seem to find the time to shop and I don't know what looks good on my frame/ build. UGH. I typically shop at the Gap and Ann Taylor LOFT.

Lindsay47's picture

I would have to say that I am most like Lois on "Malcolm in the Middle" So far I have all boys, just like she does. I'm the only girl in the house and I don't take the time for myself to do my hair and makeup. Lois wears comfy clothes and you never see her dressed up unless it is a very special occasion. She usually does little with her hair. My hair hasn't really changed since high school. She was actually called "slovenly" at work and asked to wear makeup! Although I don't work outside of the home, I'm pretty much in the same "uniform" everyday (T-shirts and jeans or shorts). All I can hope for is that my boys are better behaved than hers!

Well, I'm a stay at home mom of 3. I wear very casual clothes that are comfortable around the house, so I'm going to say Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond. When I'm out of the house, I like to dress trendy, but no dresses - except to church. I'm most comfortable in jeans and capris. I love capris. I'm only 5 feet tall and have a difficult time finding trendy petites that are not expensive. Any suggestions?

fitandholy's picture

I would have to say I am a lot like the mom from the Brady Bunch.
I love them dearly and spend time with them, but love that they have caregivers so that I can get things done.

amgoldsmith's picture
by amgoldsmith 6 mon. ago.

Ok so the TV mom I remind myself of is Wilma Flinstone in regards to personality I love my family and my husband and do everything for them. In regards to style HAHAHA Debra Messing Everybody Loves Raymond for sure.

lilybug's picture

A good place to find petites is Steinmart.

Lindsay47's picture
by Lindsay47 6 mon. ago.

Hey Stephparry---I know what you mean about not knowing what looks good on your frame/build. I have the same problem. My MIL got me a polo-type shirt for my birthday and it fits up top, but looks like a circus tent around my waist! I've always thought my shoulders were very broad for a woman, but jeez...this is ridiculous.

Lindsay47's picture
by Lindsay47 6 mon. ago.

Lilybug, as a mom whose children are older it seems like you have the time needed to shop for yourself. My kids are 2 and 6 months, so shopping for clothes for mommy is hardly possible at this time. Basically I'm wearing what I already have even though most of it doesn't fit correctly. My main problem is my weight is so up and down with pregnancies and nursing. I'm not done having kids so I hate to buy new clothes that may or may not fit in a year or two. Who knows what "size" I'll end up to be when all is said and done.

lilybug's picture
by lilybug 6 mon. ago.

Lindsey-believe me I understand. I had 4 kids in 6 years, and I had many years of not being able to get out, and also fluctuating sizes. Your time will come. Ordering online may be help if you know how that brand's sizes run.

Lindsay47's picture
by Lindsay47 6 mon. ago.

I can identify with Lois on Malcolm in the Middle because she doesn't dress to impress anybody. I dress the same as in, "take me, or leave me". Just like Lois' husband finds her attractive when she wears make-up or just mascara and a baseball cap, my husband is the same way. I guess that says more about my husband than me, but it's nice to know he thinks I'm a natural beauty.

lilybug's picture

Lindsey, I'm sure you are!

hernandez_rossana's picture
by hernandez_rossana 6 mon. ago.

hmmm...i would have to say that the tv mom that represents me best is Nancy Botwin from the SHOWTIME series WEEDS. I'm a young mother like she is and my life and family is hilariously insane as well. I'm not a widow however but i am a single mother. like her, i wear cute outfits but they are all very simple. there's an overall bland look about us and i think i've had the same hairstyle since my freshman year of high school.

hernandez_rossana's picture
by hernandez_rossana 6 mon. ago.

lately i've been noticing that i'm wearing things more often because it's hard to find the time and the money to buy new clothes or pamper myself. Like Nancy Botwin, I often find myself trying to look for some extra work so I can make ends meet.

Lindsay47's picture
by Lindsay47 6 mon. ago.

I think many of us get stuck in the same hairstyle rut. My hairstyle consists of growing it out, donating it to locks-of-love, and growing it out again.

momofniki's picture

I would have to say Claire from the Cosby Show. The reason being is b/c she had firm rules & values.

JasMo's picture
by JasMo 5 mon. ago.

I know what ya'll mean about the hair! I haven't changed my style in many years!

I would love to be Claire from the Cosby's. Now there's a stylish lady! Michelle Obama is a pretty snappy dresser too.

summer9981's picture
by summer9981 5 mon. ago.

I would have to say that I dress like Gabby from Desperate Housewives. I'm not talking about pretty, model Gabby either. I'm talking about when she was taking care of Carlos and her children in the beginning of this past season. I barely wear makeup and my wardrobe is horrible right now. I wish I could dress like Gabby the model :-) I'm expecting a baby in a few weeks so it's uncomfortable for me to get out and go shopping right now. Maybe after the baby comes I can give my wardrobe a makeover.

lilybug's picture
by lilybug 5 mon. ago.

What about Kate on Jon and Kate? Regardless of what you think about her personally, you have to admit she's mighty cute these days with her kicky hairdo and cute clothes. It's amazing what some cash will do:-)

Lindsay47's picture
by Lindsay47 5 mon. ago.

I think that Kate (Jon & Kate + 8) is a hot topic right now. Most of the other TV moms are "characters" while Kate is just herself. Personally, it's hard to admire someone's outer beauty when you don't see their inner beauty. Not that I don't like Kate, it's just that other TV moms are acting, so their personalities are created and it doesn't affect my opinion of their "style". As a mom it's important for me to display more inner beauty than outer because that's what I'm teaching my children to care about. And yes, some cash definitely enables you to dress very well!

pray4annie's picture
by pray4annie 5 mon. ago.

I have read some of the comments above and it scares me to say I really don't know many of the TV shows mentioned. I am a missionary in Mexico and don't get a lot of those shows I guess. I haven't watched this show in a long time, but I will say that I dressed like Jill Taylor from Tool Time when I lived in the United States. Since I have been out of the country that changed, now I am just your average jeans and Wal-mart tee-shirt kinda girl. I guess that could be because I live in the middle of a village in the middle of nowhere. I won't be doing that in a few weeks. (living out of the country) I will be joining the land of the living and I am so depressed about the clothes I have to bring back with me to the United States. Oh girls, if you only knew. Anyway, I have been dreaming about meeting Tim Gunn for a makeover but would love this one! I guess I will just dream!
