TriangleMom2Mom's Weekend Bets - Dec. 12-14

We're thick with holiday events this weekend. Check the full calendar for it all, but there several events that deserve a highlight.

The first is Raleigh Little Theatre's Cinderella. For 25 years now, the community theatre's madcap production of Cinderella, including men as the ugly stepsisters and a zany fairy godmother, has been drawing families from across the region. It starts up Friday, Dec. 12, and runs through Dec. 21.

This year's show comes with a little twist: During each performance, a child from the audience will be selected at random to go on stage and participate. At the show, parents can fill out a form that’s put into a fishbowl. About 10 minutes before the curtain goes up, a name will be drawn at random from the bowl. The child and their family will be moved to special box seats so the child is close to the stage when it’s time to appear. They’ll be on stage with the fairy godmother helping her cast spells for about five or ten minutes while other actors go out into the audience “searching” for Cinderella.

There's no age limit. Just be sure your child will want to be up there.

Tickets are $16 in the balcony and $26 in the orchestra. Everyone, regardless of age, must have a ticket. The cast will sign autographs after the show. And Cinderella’s Boutique will be set up for all your child’s princess needs.

Show times are 7:30 p.m., Dec. 12, Dec. 18 and Dec. 19. It’s at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., Dec. 13, Dec. 14, Dec. 20 and Dec. 21. The show is great for kids ages 4 to 8 and older than that too.

Other events this weekend:

Chapel Hill's Ackland Art Museum's Holiday Pajama Party is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Dec. 12. Kids should come dressed in their pajamas for some stories and other activities. The event is free.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade starts at 10 a.m. on Dec. 13 and runs from Chapel Hill to Carrboro. Watch it in comfort at the Franklin Hotel. Their Holiday Parade Viewing Breakfast (that's a pdf) includes a make your own hot chocolate bar and panoramic views of the parade. It's $25 per person, $15 for 7- to 18-year-olds and free for kids 6 and under. Reservations are a must.

Hop aboard Pullen Park’s Holiday Express this weekend. The event, which started Dec. 10, continues through Dec. 14, and includes rides on the park’s popular carousel and train and a visit with Santa. There’s food, holiday entertainment and other fun. The event runs 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person and available at the door or online. Event parking is located off Western Boulevard at the Dorothea Dix Soccer fields on Hunt Drive. Both parking and shuttle services are free.

There’s still tickets for Disney on Ice: Worlds of Fantasy at the RBC Center. The show, which opened Dec. 10 at the arena, runs through Dec. 14. Tickets start at $16. The show features several Disney stories, including Cars, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Tinker Bell.
