Trout Fishing in America
I popped in Trout Fishing in America's latest CD "Big Round World" into the car for the first time last week and this was my daughter's first reaction after hearing the title track: "I want to take that inside so we can dance!"
The CD is the latest from the Arkansas-based duo, who started playing together three decades ago and are three-time Grammy nominees. Their latest features 14 original songs with catchy melodies, thoughtful and playful lyrics, and, indeed, some great rhythm for dancing.
Long-time friends Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet are Trout Fishing, named after the novella by Richard Brautigan, which Grimwood was reading when the two were touring with another band decades ago.
The two pull from a wide variety of musical genres to turn out some great music for kids and adults. You'll hear everything from Afro-pop on the title track to cool jazz, rock and bluegrass on "Big Round World."
Grimwood told me this week that it's what he and Idlet, call "trout music."
"To us it just goes all over the place," he said. "It's no big deal. It all seems to mesh together."
And it does. The songs move from universal themes like how we're all different on "Big Round World" to eating spinach on "Curse of the Spinach." Anyone can related to the almost cartoonish song "The Alarm Clock Rings," about a kid trying to sleep in on a Saturday morning when his alarm clock doesn't let him.
Many of the songs were written during songwriting workshops with children, including "Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks." When Trout Fishing asked the kids at a California school what they wanted to write about, the kids said celebrities.
"I'm thinking oh oh," Grimwood said. But when they asked the kids to narrow it down, the students nominated King and Parks.
"We came up with the beginnings of that song and finished it ourselves later," Grimwood said. "That was a joy to write."
It's a wonderful tribute to King and Parks with its own lessons for kids.
If it's not easy to do, you've got to try a little harder," the chorus goes. "If it's tough to learn, you've got to get a little smarter. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks tried to bring us all together with their big big hearts."
"Big Round World" is the ninth family music CD from Trout. Last year, they released their sixth CD with more adult folk/rock music.
