UPDATE: New Rules and Secondhand Stuff
A quick update on the situation that I first wrote about Monday night. Here's the word from some local shops:
ARound Again Consignments in North Raleigh decided Tuesday night to stop accepting any children's items for kids 12 and under. They will stop selling the merchandise on Feb. 10. Go to the store's FAQ page and click on "What Items Do You Accept?" for more details. Rick King, who runs the store with his wife, said they don't want to risk the possible fines and jail time that violaters face.
Patrick Fish at Cary's Kid to Kid in Crossroads tells me they're not making any changes for now. "We're hoping that everything works out," he said.
DeeDee Lavinder, owner of The Red Hen in Carrboro, also said she's not making any changes either, though has been in touch with her local representatives and expects to send out an e-mail to her customers by the end of the week. "If we need to move in forces ... I feel like the store's customers would rally," she said
Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina also is conducting business as usual and is waiting for Goodwill Industries International to come out with some guidance by Friday or Monday.
The Kids Exchange is rallying its giant base of 20,000 shoppers to write their representatives and sign a petition that's being passed around. The sale, which opens to the public Jan. 23 at the Fairgrounds in Raleigh, won't have to comply with the new rules this time around. But the sale's Amy Winstead tells me she is encouraging everybody to write their representatives.
And the Twice As Nice sale in Apex is moving their sale up from late February to Feb. 5 through Feb. 7 to avoid the new rules that go into effect Feb. 10, Michelle just e-mailed me. She is still looking for a location.
If you run a thrift store, consignment sale, etc., and are making or thinking about making changes in response to the rules, please let me know. Just post a comment or e-mail me.
