Weirdest Place to Pump
Where's the weirdest place you ever pumped (breastmilk that is)?
The Washington Post has this story about where and how women pump when they're away from home or at work. One woman apparently taped a picture of a cow to her office door when she started pumping.
As my daughter never took a bottle (and no I don't consider that a badge of honor. We tried and tried and tried she just never would do it), I never really had to deal with it. Luckily, I was able to walk to her day care.
But one of my colleagues, Ruth Sheehan, said her top three oddest pumping places were in a utility closet at a rural library, a Subway bathroom and right in the middle of a busy LAX airport bathroom (great birth control lesson for the girls walking by, she says). Ruth says she used her in-car pump so much it burned out the plug inside her car.

Not a weird place, but I did store up three days' worth of milk in a hotel fridge while attending a conference and carried the bottles packed in ice in a tiny cooler back on the plane. Are you allowed to "carry on" breastmilk these days?
It's not so weird, but when I was in Texas covering the Legislature, a state senator gave me permission to pump in her office. I did it once, but it was sort of weird. My boss was great and put blinds up in her office so I could pump there. And, I pumped at a wedding reception.
You can take breast milk or formula on a plane with or without a baby. Here's information from the TSA.
It does say they can test it. I wonder how they do that!?
When my son was only 2 months old I was out at dinner at the mall and did not feel comfortable nursing at the table so I went to pump and bring him back a bottle. I didn't know they had things like nursing rooms - so I went into the bathrooms at various stores and couldn't find a plug. I finally ended up pumping in the middle of the Barnes and Nobles bathroom right next to where the door opened.
It is a great time for all ages.

I had no problem discreetly nursing in public, so I only pumped in my office during the day so my kids would have breastmilk at daycare. I was fortunate to have my own office, so while pumping, I would read memos and stuff on my desk, do crossword puzzles online and yes, even talk to clients on the phone!
That as 15 years ago. Have they come out with an "industrial strength" breast pump that doesn't look like a plumber's toolbox? And yes, visualizing your baby does help getting the flow started...although I felt guilty, like I was fantasizing about sex or something!
