When I Grow Up
What do you want to do when you grow up?
Are you already doing it or are you still searching? I’m still searching, but I come up with ideas all of the time.
Last week, after a visit to Booda Beans in Apex, I was pretty sure I wanted to open a similar coffee shop in Carrboro. Today, after playing at Market Street Books in Chapel Hill with my kids, I decided I wanted to work there, or maybe even own my own bookstore. Or, maybe get a master’s degree in library science and become a librarian at an elementary school.
Some days I want to be a teacher. Other days I want to run a nonprofit (or the world!), or maybe just work at a nonprofit, but not be the boss.
Everyday I want to own my own cookie store, or co-own with my sister, with my mom serving as chairman of the board since we use her original recipe with some minor tweaks. But then I wonder if it is really in the best interest of this country of ever-expanding waistlines for another bakery to open, especially one that makes only cookies, and maybe cupcakes if I ever take that cake decorating class at Michael's?
I’m pretty content right now with being a stay-at-home mom, doing a little freelance writing on the side, but I’m also always trying to plan my next move.
In a November issue of Newsweek, comedian Carlos Mencia wrote a particularly funny story about how he dropped out of college to become a comedian. The point of his column was to tell people who have lost their jobs that now is the time to follow their dreams.
I’m just trying to decide which dream to follow.

I think that it is wonderful that you have such neat dreams for yourself, especially the cookie store. Sounds yummy!
