When's the right time to get rid of the training wheels?

When do you know it's the right time to get your kid off his/her training wheels? Our 5-year-old loves riding his bike, but has trouble balancing and compensates for this with the training wheels. I'm thinking of having our babysitter teach him to ride (that's how I learned with my babysitter, not my parents). Tell me your strategies.

We took the training wheels off of our 4-year-old son's bike and now he hardly rides it. He said he was ready to learn but now doesn't seem interested. We did get a trail-a-bike and he loves riding that. I do too because it gets him used to balancing. Ask your son if he is ready to try to two wheels instead of four. He may be.

My children were motivated to learn to ride their bikes with out training wheels when they saw a friend who was riding that way. Then, they seemed to learn very quickly, without much guidance from mom and dad, because they were self-motivated. My children were all around six when they finally learned.(Although my son is almost seven and he seems to be in no rush to learn)

Thanks for your suggestions! I don't think he's quite ready (or maybe it's me since he rides like a maniac) :)
