Why I Bought the Pink Sparkly Princess Shoes

I was searching the children's shoe aisle at Target for some brown loafers that met the uniform code at my daughter's charter school. Then I saw THE SHOES. They were covered in pink glitter and had a satin bow on the front. They would melt any little girl's heart.

I could hear my six year old daughter’s voice, “Oh mommy, I will be a princess when I wear those shoes. Look at the sparkles.” Being the practical mom that I am, I looked at the price and then put them back. I told myself that there were at least 10 different reasons why I shouldn’t buy the shoes with number 1 being that they were totally impractical to number 10 being that my son still needed school clothes. I pushed the cart to the next aisle in the shoe department still searching for the boring school shoes.

Throughout the rest of my shopping trip, I kept thinking about those shoes. I kept hearing her squeal when she first saw them. I could see her showing everyone we ran into her princess shoes. I kept picturing her wearing them every moment I would let her. And I knew her eyes would sparkle each and every time she slipped them on her size 13 feet.

“Well, maybe I will splurge on those shoes next year,” I rationalized to myself, “When gas is cheaper and the economy is better.”

Then it hit me. Next year she might not think that the princess shoes were the coolest thing in the world. Heck, next year she might not even think they were princess shoes. They might be worn once and shoved in the closet because they were too babyish. I turned my cart around and headed back to the shoes aisle. It was worth $14.99 to live in the world of pink sparkly princess shoes with her as long I possibly could.

From Trike to Two Wheeler

Jennifer Gregory left Florida almost 11 years ago to escape the heat and enjoys living in a place where the seasons change. She lives in Youngsville, N.C., which she usually refers to as north of Wake Forest, and has been married to her husband for almost 10 years.  As the mom of two kids and three dogs, her house is filled with lots of joyful noise and barking.  Her daughter (7) is convinced that she will be a princess when she grows up and her son (5) has aspirations of being the next Dale Jr. After years of writing software documentation for various companies, she "retired" when her daughter was born to become a stay at home mom. Now that her kids are in school, she has finally figured out what she wants to be when she grows up.  She spends her mornings as a freelance writer and her afternoons hanging out with her kids.  The only things she misses about living in Florida are her friends and family, Publix fried chicken and going to Florida Gator football games.

Jennifer appears Mondays on TriangleMom2Mom.

I gave her the shoes this afternoon after I wrote this. Her face lit up and she said a long "OOOOOOO" followed by "sparkly sparkly princess shoes." And she hasn't taken them off her feet since 3 pm . I think she might sleep in them.

It is so hard to resist the temptations of Target. I would have not bought the shoes, regretted it, gone back and and found every size but my daughter's.

There was only one pair that was my daughter's size.  That is one of the reasons I caved to the shoes... I actually went back to that aisle THREE times trying to figure out what to do.

I think you did the the right thing, too. You were so right when you thought that she may not even want them next year. Kids grow so fast, and I know things like that can certainly add up and not be good on a family budget, but perhaps, one can cut somewhere else this week. Great post!

I am so glad I bought them. She wore them all weekend, including to church. This morning she carefully put them in her carseat so she could put them on when I picked her up from school.

I had to register here just so that I could comment. I can totally relate to your shoe saga. When we first ran into the "Dorothy Shoes" all they had were the red ones. These made my daughters both VERY happy because they were so sparkly they did not care what color they were. Then one day I was at the store and THEY HAD PINK,,, PINK with a BUTTERFLY ON IT none the less! Well we had to get these for our "pink" girl. Our other daughter's favorite color is green, which I have not found in glittery shoes yet, so my next adventure is to try and make a pair of green ones myself. They love their sparkly shoes so much it inspired me to try and fix the ones we have. It was a fun craft project for me. Now I have even written an article on eHow about it, and blogged about it ... http://www.drizzlyblog.com/2008/08/ehow-here-i-come.html Just for the heck of it I did a search to see if anyone was looking for information on how to fix this type of shoe, since they are not that cheap and do wear out fairly fast, and I came across your entry. I could not believe it,, I had to laugh for knowing exactly what you went through. I often make laps around the store trying to talk myself into or out of something ( usually the stuff for me jumps out of the cart, and stuff for the kids magically appears!) Stop by and check out my blog if you want.. Have a great day!
