Enjoy an old fashioned celebration of our nation's birth. The day begins with a parent-child fishing tournament, followed by a "Parade in the Park," a performance by Applause! Cary Youth Theatre and a host of games and competitions from donut eating to watermelon seed spitting. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. for the fishing tournament. Bring your kids, their bikes, motorized cars or some walking shoes to participate in Wake Forest's children's parade, a walking parade (no vehicles allowed). Lineup for the children's parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of North Main Street and West Juniper Avenue. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. It's free and growing. As many as 2,000 participated last year. Kids on bikes should wear their helmets. Start: 10:00 am

North Hills will celebrate Independence Day with a children's bike parade, games, face-painting, a juggler, caricaturist, prizes, food and entertainment. Start: 1:00 pm

The Joel Lane Museum House will sponsor its annual Independence Day open house. Lane was a founding father of North Carolina's capital city and an officer in the militia during the American Revolutionary War. Start: 2:30 pm

Presented by Raleigh's parks department in collaboration with the N.C. State Fair. Admission and activities, including games, inflatables, live entertainment, music and fireworks, are free. Free parking is available near Gate 9 Trinity Road. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. and activities start at 3 p.m. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. In the case of bad weather, indoor activities continue, outdoor activities are canceled and the fireworks display will be rescheduled for July 5 at 9 p.m. Start: 5:00 pm
