Hunter Jumper Horse Show with free admission (except for Saturday night's Grand Prix. Gates open at 6 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m.).

The 24th annual Duke Children's Benefit Horse Show is the largest hunter-jumper show in the Southeast featuring nearly a week of competition from the United States and Canada. The show also offers a behind-the-scenes look at how horses are cared for, trained and shown. Events run until the evening each night except for Sunday when things will wrap up by 5 p.m.

Tickets were to go on sale today for the annual favorite - the Museum of Life and Science's Santa Train. This year, there are 15 nights (five more than last year). The special nighttime train features lots of holiday lights, music, crafts and other fun.

But a glitch has forced the museum to set back the date to Nov. 15 at 10 a.m.

The train departs every 20 minutes from 5:40 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. on Dec. 3-7, Dec. 10-14 and Dec. 17-21.

Helen Thayer, author, photographer and adventurer, makes a special appearance at Marbles Kids Museum on December 2 at 10:30 and noon to share exciting stories of her expeditions to the far reaches of the world! In 1988, New Zealand born Helen became the first woman to walk and ski to either of the world's poles when she trekked solo to the Magnetic North Pole without a dog sled or snowmobile. Event features a hayride, crafts for the children, nativity animals, a visit with Santa, and a campfire and marshmallow roasting (weather permitting). Join Santa at Mordecai Historic Park on the Raleigh Trolley as he searches for one of his missing elves. Riders will enjoy a tour of Raleigh with Santa as their guide. Tickets are $10. Reservations required.

The show moves to Durham's Carolina Theatre the next weekend with performances at 7 p.m., Dec. 13 and 2 p.m., Dec. 14.

Ira David Wood III's "A Christmas Carol" opens at the new Durham Performing Arts Center this year with performances from Dec. 5 through Dec. 7. The show, now in its 34th year, is a Triangle Christmas tradition.

Take a self-guided tour of the Carolina Inn's commissioned artists' interpretations of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The exhibit also includes dolls, children's toys and other childhood treasures passed down through the families of Nell and Gorden Rutherford.

Horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic district also will begin and end at the Alexander Dickson House. The third annual Fearrington Holiday Market will be held on Dec. 7 from noon to 4 p.m. at Fearrington Village. The Bronze Voices Handbell Choir from the United Church of Chapel Hill will perform an open-air concert from 2 to 3 p.m., and vendors will sell their arts and crafts. Chatham
Outreach Alliance (CORA) will collect canned food for the local food pantry.

Wake Forest Presbyterian Church is presenting the 9th annual “Walk through Bethlehem” living nativity program at the following times: Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6, from 6:00 - 9:00 pm; Sunday, December 7, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
