Northgate's popular Maestro Leonard Bearstein will be conducting his orchestra of 18 animatronic bears starting Nov. 22 until after Christmas. During this drop-in program, watch Lumbee tribe member James Malcolm create wall hangings and medallions based on traditional Lumbee pinecone patchwork art. Malcolm uses actual pinecones to create the finished product. He takes a traditional Lumbee design and kicks it up a notch with a contemporary twist.

Helen Thayer, author, photographer and adventurer, makes a special appearance at Marbles Kids Museum on December 2 at 10:30 and noon to share exciting stories of her expeditions to the far reaches of the world! In 1988, New Zealand born Helen became the first woman to walk and ski to either of the world's poles when she trekked solo to the Magnetic North Pole without a dog sled or snowmobile. She was also the first woman and first American to circumnavigate the Magnetic North Pole. Her engaging presentation will thrill the young and old alike!

A Christmas tradition in Durham. The concert is at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Duke Chapel, but concert goers should get there as early as 6 p.m. to get seats. The only admission cost is one nonperishable food item.

Gingerbread House Making with Sugarland! Experience the fun decorating a professional-made gingerbread house. Each participant will receive an undecorated ginger bread house with frosting, coconut snowflakes, and candy of all kinds. Sugarland staff will give instruction on creating one-of-a-king decorations. Story Stars Storytimes on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. are for three year olds to five year olds for Moms/Dads and Children, Grandparents and Grandchildren and for small In-Home Child Care groups. Storytimes consist of theme related stories with books, flannelboard, songs, fingerplays and games. We meet in the Story Time Clubhouse on the first floor of the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield. Storytime begins at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesdays.

This is the time of year when we are thankful for all that we can provide to our children. At the same time, we need to stop and consider all the children who have so very little. The Raleigh Rescue Mission has a great need for many children's items. The club, girl help, is working to collect as many of these items as possible.
