First Night Raleigh, the city's long-running alcohol-free event that takes up much of dowtown and features live music and other entertainment.

A children's celebration runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the state history and natural science museums.

Then, starting at 6 p.m., First Night Raleigh gets a more adult, but still very family-friendly vibe. This year, the Smithereens will help welcome the new year and Raleigh's annual acorn drop.

The second annual Birdapalooza! is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 10, at the Museum of Life and Science, 433 Murray Ave., Durham. The event features Birdman Dave, who will talk about the birds of the Amazon Rainforest. Other events include Hawk Talk, where visitors can meet Misha, the museum’s Red-Tailed Hawk. Reserve your space for one of the programs with Birdman Dave. The event is free with admission, though a fee is required for Birdman Dave programs. Regardless of what you think of our new state officials, everybody loves a parade! Right!?

The hour-long inaugural parade begins at Davie and Fayetteville streets in downtown Raleigh. Then it goes north toward Capitol Boulevard, turns right on Morgan, left on Wilmington and ends at Wilmington and Edenton next to the N.C. Musuem of History. The parade will feature colorfully dressed reenactors representing state historic sites, marching bands, community groups, clowns and state officials.

Where do animals go in the winter? Join a nature instructor and find out how animals survive the winter. Take a walk and see if you can find evidence of animals in the park. This class is open to participants from 3-5 years of age and the fee is $5.00. This program will be meet January 10 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Training Lodge which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.

A juggling workshop for children and adults ages 9 and up! Learn to juggle! Spend some time throwing things up and dropping them, and you'll be amazed at how it will perk up your spirits. You don't have to be coordinated to learn to juggling--juggling improves coordination. Balls will be provided. Each participant will receive 3 tennis balls to take home and practice with. Sheila Kerrigan, The Mime Who Talks! and The Juggler Who Drops! will lead the workshop.

Cary's Dreamfest 2009, which celebrates the life of Martin Luther King Jr., kicks off with a concert by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University. The group sings Negro spirituals around the world.
