In the spring of 2007, Elena Rue and Alison Aucoin met through the common interests of adoption and Ethiopia. Elena, a photographer and member of an adoptive family, had spent the previous year documenting children orphaned by HIV in Addis Ababa. Alison, a native of New Orleans who moved to Durham after Hurricane Katrina, had just begun the process of adopting from Ethiopia as a single woman.
