A kick-off to a month-long program in February to encourage Johnston County residents to read "To Kill a Mockingbird," my personal favorite all-time book. Lace up your sneakers and join stars from The Greatest Show on Earth to get CircusFit at Marbles Kids Museum! Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey clowns, dancers and acrobats will teach kids how to use circus skills such as juggling, hula hooping and more through a program designed to teach fun and engaging ways to stay active, physically fit and healthy.

In the spring of 2007, Elena Rue and Alison Aucoin met through the common interests of adoption and Ethiopia. Elena, a photographer and member of an adoptive family, had spent the previous year documenting children orphaned by HIV in Addis Ababa. Alison, a native of New Orleans who moved to Durham after Hurricane Katrina, had just begun the process of adopting from Ethiopia as a single woman. The two decided to collaborate on the documentation of the process through photographs and audio.

Siler City is about an hour from Raleigh and Durham and about 30 minutes from Chapel Hill.

The Philharmonic Association is bringing together three local student groups to put on Don Quixote at the Wedding of Camacho at 3 p.m., Feb. 8, at Athens Drive High School Auditorium, 1420 Athens Dr., in southwest Raleigh. The Triangle Youth Philharmonic, Raleigh Dance Theatre and Enloe Chamber Choir will perform the comic Baroque opera by Telemann. The performance also incorporates Telemann’s Don Quixote Suite. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for school-age children. The performance, which is about one hour and 15 minutes long, is best for kids age 6 and up.
“A Singing Stream: A Black Family Chronicle” follows the Landis family of Granville County, who has been singing gospel music as the Golden Echoes for generations. Watch clips from the film and hear the current group perform live in concert. PineCone co-sponsors the program.

Back for it's 10th year at Academy Nights, Mah Jongg is hotter than ever after this year’s Chinese Olympics! Learn the ancient Chinese game played the American Mah Jongg League way. Two nights of class (February 10 and February 17) will get you started on a lifetime of fun. DANA LANGE loves games of all kinds and has been teaching Mah Jongg for the last ten years. In her free time she is the community and events editor of DurhamMagazine.
This course will teach the basic principles of landscape design from site analysis through construction. We will discuss the use of edibles throughout history and look at historical precedents to discuss both form and function. We will also discuss how design, plant choice, and maintenance can support biodiversity and nurture the environment while conforming to typical forms and textures of the residential landscape.
If you have familiarity with computers, but limited experience with spreadsheets, this course is a good introduction to Excel. This class will cover Excel functions such as creating and moving around a spreadsheet, performing simple calculations, and copying and pasting. Participants will develop a spreadsheet they can use to balance a checkbook, monitor an investment portfolio, or develop a household inventory. DAVID SHEEKS owns his own software development company.

Carys teens are set to bring to life the story of The Very Great Grandson of Sherlock Holmes on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Cary Senior Center Ballroom, 801 High House Road, at 7 p.m. The spoof of classic Film Noir finds young Sherwood reluctantly in the middle of a marvelously complex murder mystery. The free event will feature teens from the Masters in Acting Class offered by Applause! Cary Youth Theatre.

A three to five mile hike through the Eno River State Park. Each hike lasts about 2.5 hours and is led by guides. The Eno River Association's Winter Hike series runs every Sunday between January and March.
