What's your opinion on the cervical cancer vaccine?

There is growing concern about the safety of the cervical cancer vaccine and there have been numerous documented cases of injury and death in the US to girls that have receive the vaccine.
Any thoughts? Pros and cons? I'm always so hesitant to trust a new vaccine that has not had the advantage of being tested over time.
My other thought is this...if HPV is sexually transmitted, then can't we just teach our children to wait until marriage for sex? I feel that this is not an unrealistic proposition considering that people have been sexually abstinent until marriage for many centuries in a lot of cultures. It is really only within the last 50 years that all of the sexual moral taboos over premarital sex have been eliminated.
Here's a story on it. It is in the UK, but it's basically the same product.

Will you get an H1N1 flu shot?

A government panel has recommended who should get the H1N1 vaccination first: pregnant women, followed by children, people with underlying medical conditions, people who care for babies, and health care workers.

Read more about the recommendations by clicking here.

The vaccine should be available this fall. Will you get it for yourself (if you qualify) and your kids? Or are you leery about it's safety or effectiveness?

Peanut Allergy Cure?

There's some potentially good news for kids who are suffering from peanut allergies.

Researchers, including some at Duke, say they may have found a new therapy for allergy sufferers that involves giving children small doses of peanut over time under the supervision of a doctor. Read more about it in this story.

More study needs to be done to confirm the findings, but researchers are optimistic.

NC  FACES is a great local group that provides resources, support, playgroups and activities for families with kids with allergies. You can find more about them on the Mom2Mom Special Needs Support resource page.

I'd love to hear from other parents out there who are dealing with allergies. Have you found some great doctors in the area, restaurants that are understanding, schools or teachers who have been great as you deal with the allergy? Pleas share!

Are your kids' toys safe?

New federal rules will go into effect this week limiting the amount of lead and phthalates (an additive used to make plastics soft) that can be in products for children 12 and under.

Congress passed the law last summer after millions of unsafe toys were recalled. Many were made in China.

The new rules also require some pretty extensive testing and certification of those products, though federal officials delayed the beginning of those requirements for a year in order to address just how all of that must be done.

What do you think? Will the new rules make toys and other products for kids safer? Or is there still something to worry about?

Birth Defect: Happy Ending

There's a really interesting story today in The N&O about a little girl who was born with a rare birth defect - several of her organs were outside her rib cage when she was born. Things appeared pretty dire in the beginning, but there's a really happy ending for little Erica Nance.

It's really amazing what doctors can do these days.

Rex Urgent Care

Learned this today at the chamber's Working Mothers' Lunch and thought it was pretty useful: If you're headed to one of Rex's Urgent Care sites in Wakefield and Cary, you can find out how long the wait is by going to this Web site. Check the left hand column. Much better than my method of counting the cars in the parking lot before heading to the next place.

Health Insurance For Kids

There's a story in The N&O today that says that 1 in 8 kids in North Carolina are not covered by health insurance - though many of them are eligible for federal or state coverage. The state is No. 6 in the nation for the number of kids who have no coverage. Read about it here.

Health insurance is something I take for credit big time. I can't imagine not having it to rely on. I think I'd worry constantly about the latest sniffle or fall.

If your kids don't have coverage, please click here to get more information about whether or not they could be covered.

Cold Medicine for Little Kids

The cough and cold medicine industry says kids under age 4 shouldn't get cold medicine, according to this story. Others say the medicine should be banned for kids under 6.

With flu and cold season coming up, will you be using cold meds on your little ones? Have you? Or does something else work for you (we're believers in humidifiers in my house)?

I haven't given my daughter the medicine on recommendation of my pediatrician. I always feel weird after taking them myself so never felt comfortable giving them to my daughter. Though I know other parents who swear by them.

CPR/First Aid/Fiearms/CCH Class/Unarmed Self-Defense

I'm a Paramedic Certified by the American Heart Association to teach CPR, AED, Choking Management, and First Aid for infants, children and adults. The first 2 to 3 minutes in an emergency is the most critical time in a medical emergency, and the average person can learn lifesaving techniques in 3 to 4 hours. I believe this is a must for all parents. I can come to you, or set up a class. A minimum of 8 students is required.

I'm also certified to teach the following:

Pistol, Rifle, Home Defense (NAR).

Concealed/Carry Handgun Class (N.C. Department of Justice).
