Midwives & Doulas
Midwives and doulas are an alternative to a doctor's care. See what your options are in the Triangle.
Midwives
Nurse-midwives are licensed in North Carolina as nurses and approved to practice as Certified Nurse Midwives.
The
Women's Birth & Wellness Center, 930 Martin Luther King
Jr. Blvd. in Chapel Hill, offers childbirth in a relaxed atmosphere -
somewhat like being at home. Midwives assist in the entire process,
from the beginning stages of pregnancy to delivery.
UNC has a Midwifery Service
through the school of Obstetrics and Gynecology, to help women
throughout their lives - from teens to older women. They offer prenatal
care, counseling and education, as well as family planning education
and well woman care.
The American College of Nurse-Midwives has a practice locator to help you find a midwife in your area.
Doulas
A
doula helps take care of a mother's emotional needs throughout
childbirth by providing support and suggestions for partners that can
enhance their experiences of birth.
Doulas of North America (DONA) offers a locator to help you in your search. This list is broken down by city.
The Triangle Parentzone also offers a list of doulas and services in the Triangle area.
