Detroit Public Schools are Endangered

As of now, the issue on Obama’s health care is the center of talks in all the states of America. Well, we still don’t know what are the results of the votes and hopefully whatever it is – it could benefit all our people.

Big Words

A few weeks ago as we were walking out of a restaurant, I noticed that my son's shoe was untied and I bent down to tie it for him. Trevor put his hands on his hips, cocked his head and exclaimed, "Oh I am so embarrassed" in his best dramatic voice. The crowd waiting for a table outside the restaurant burst into hysterics and a man said "That is a mighty big word for a little kid." Trevor beamed with pride. At that moment Trevor decided that his new hobby was going to be trying to use as many big words as he possibly could.

You Lie

The other day, I caught my teenage son in a lie. It was about something pretty insignificant in my book, but for whatever reason, he felt the need to tell an untruth.

His response was, "How do you always know when I'm lying? It's so annoying."

Wha-, say what?

I snapped back with, "How about you just stop lying?"

Confused, I did what I do when I need answers. I headed over to Google and typed in "why teens lie."

Whoa! Okay, so clearly it wasn't just my problem.

College students and spring break dieting

As spring break approaches for college students, the desire to rapidly lose weight before spring break in conjunction with the desire to party during spring break can lead to a dangerous, preliminary form of disordered eating called Drunkorexia. Replacing food calories with alcohol calories is not only dangerous, it can be damaging to your overall health. For more information on drunkorexia or eating disorders in college, click here for a informative flyer from Eating Recovery Center. (www.eatingrecoverycenter.com/pdf/ERC_College_FIN.pdf)

Discussion on Part 1 of Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society

I just finished Part 1 and am really enjoying the book. Let's talk about Part 1. I have included a few discussion questions about Part 1. Feel free to post any other comments/points you want to talk about. If you have read further in the book, try not to post any spoilers for those of us still reading.

Since I didn't know much about Guernsey and the Channel Islands I did a little bit of research. Thanks Di for the suggestion about posting background on the area.

Here is a website about the area today:

Gut Feelings

This time last year, I walked out of a teacher conference wondering if everything would be ok. There were nearly four months left of school. There was still time for the pieces of the puzzle to come together. I told myself all would be fine.

And then, with one week until summer, I realized all was far from fine. That when two teachers look perplexed as to why something isn't clicking, you should be concerned. When they are hoping that you can provide  them with learning strategies, the writing is on the wall. But it can be hard to read when you're emotionally invested.

March Madness

Jane Deacle, children's librarian at the Cameron Village Regional Library, hears lots of talk about basketball during March, so she decided to share some great books to read with your children that have a basketball theme.

- The Winning Basket. (Child’s World, 2008, ages 4-8) by Cecilia Minden and Joanne Meier

In this simple story belonging to the third level of Herbster Readers, young Herbie’s imagination is sparked by a classroom visit from his favorite pro basketball player.

Photography

Hi,

I am new to the site. Can anybody give me suggestions on good photographers in the Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay area that come to your home for portraits?  I am looking specifically for newborn portraits.

Thanks!

As a licensed k-6 teacher with four years teaching experience, and recently two years of grocery store management experience, I have decided to stay home with my 9-month old daughter. We live in a spacious four-bedroom, two living room home filled with age-appropriate toys, children’s music, children’s videos, and children’s books.

Facebook Friends?

I did it. I just "unfriended" someone from Facebook. Don't worry—it wasn't you. In fact, it wasn't even someone I knew. It was someone who knew someone I knew, so when the person requested friendship, I figured, why not? I trusted our mutual connection, and I knew it was harmless.

It's a great community...

One of my favorite shows is Community. I love the diversity of the study group a bunch of students formed at . I love the irreverence and willingness to disregard any attempts at political correctness.  To see what I mean, you can watch it at 8 p.m. on Thursdays or click here to see the make-up of this crazy group.

The Period of P.U.R.P.L.E. Crying - Have you ever heard of it?

Wanted to introduce pregnant women and new moms to this helpful program, if you haven't already heard of it.  They launched the program in N.C. just this year, so moms who deliver in N.C. hospitals should receive free information and a DVD on the topic of coping with infant crying.
