Observations From a Well Known Theme Park

Last week, I was lucky enough to be able to take my oldest daughter to Disney World for her fifth birthday. And I made some interesting observations along the way: It’s okay to have your kids watch DVDs for nine hours straight. Any thoughts on thinking that activities could happen in between DVD watching should be squashed immediately. It will save your sanity. Gummy Bears melt in minivans in…

The Case of the Missing Cookies

So Ray and I just figured out something, and I was laughing so hard I was crying... Ray picked the kids up early from school yesterday to take advantage of the good weather and took them to a park. I got home and started dinner and decided to make a quick batch of chocolate chip cookies as a couple of neighbors were coming over to play and I have been wanting to make this particular recipe. So eve…

There Comes a Time When You Have to Let Go

There comes a time when you have to let go, walk away and trust that your kids know what they are doing. For the past few weeks, we have been giving our oldest Ashley a little more freedom. We let her walk ahead in Harris Teeter to get a cookie, she rides her scooter down the street without us being on top of her, she ran back into a restaurant to get my car keys that I had left there while I wat…

Letting Go

My oldest daughter Ashley is of that age where her friends matter to her and seeing her friends and playing is all she wants to do. She wakes up on the weekends and wants to know if she can play with her friends that day. It actually works to our advantage as we can use it now to punish her if she misbehaves.

My Children Are Turning Into Me

When I was in college, I was pretty possessive with my belongings. Maybe it was the fact I grew up with a twin brother whom I was forced to share things with it, or maybe it is just in my nature, or maybe I just wasn’t used to having a roommate that would use my things without asking. First it was my freshman year roommate who over Christmas break wore all my clothes I had left in the dorm r…

Bugging Out

I realize all parts of the United States have bugs and critters and things I would rather not encounter on a daily basis. And maybe where we lived in Virginia prior to moving to North Carolina was just so crammed with people, there was no where for the bugs and other creatures to come into my sight.

A Big Day

This Friday, my oldest daughter Ashley graduates from preschool. I am really not sure if I should bring one box of tissues or two…and heck, just writing that sentence made me tear up. I know I am not going to handle it well. She was my first-born, and I am not ready to see her head off into kindergarten. I am ready to hold onto her, hug her tight and take her home, hug her tight some more. I …

Taking the Hard Road

I used to think that parenting was hard - the diaper changes, the sleepless nights, the wondering if I was doing it all right. That was cake to what parenting is now. I will take blowout diapers any day over figuring out the mind of a five year old. I have cried my heart out over the decisions I have had to make in dealing with my daughter’s behavior over the last few weeks.

Sleepovers

In July, my oldest daughter Ashley turns five. Every day I get a different request for a birthday party anywhere from a cheerleading party to a sleepover. I am not completely opposed to the sleepover idea. I would only allow a few kids, and getting pizza and renting a movie would be much less expensive than the going rate at Jump Zone. Plus, I am thinking something a little more low key would be g…

The Grocery Trip

Grocery shopping is always an adventure with kids. I attempt to avoid shopping with my kids at all costs, even if that means a late night run for groceries. Every once in a while, I need to run into Harris Teeter for a few things in between our big trips to our local Super Walmart.
