Slacker Mom

It's Friday afternoon, and we're trying to leave the pool.  I know that when I walk into the house, a load of laundry is awaiting folding in the dryer.  The breakfast dishes are still in the sink.  I also need to swing by the dry cleaners, for the shirts have been ready since Tuesday.  Good thing Really Big Guy doesn’t need one until Monday.

Reality

Here I sit on the beach.  With my sister. And our four boys run wild. As we sit, we hear fits of giggles turn into fits of rage.  And then cycle back through to giggles.  We see subtle pushes and hands moving.  There are two sets of brothers running on this beach. And brothers fight.

Little Lessons

I went to a cocktail party for one of the publications I work for. There was no pressure on me to do anything other than enjoy.

Free At Last

Summer has rolled back around.  Pools are open.  Days are endless.  It’s everything we’ve waited for.  Wished for.  And now we are free. Depending on your age, being free has different meanings.  There’s the freedom the kids feel when the last school bell rings and they’re dismissed.  There’s the freedom they feel when they go to the snack bar at the p…

The Funky Smell

Something strange is in the air. I first noticed it as I sat at a practice, killing time.  I was minding my own business, when suddenly, I heard the stampede.  About 20 boys were running my way, heading for their water bottles, stacked nicely across the ledge I was perched on.   As they closed in, an unmistakable aroma penetrated my nostrils. It made me gasp for air, stand up and take a f…

Acceptance

The countdown's almost over.  School’s practically out for some children. For others, it will continue. Little Guy is one of the others. He’s one of the many little kids running around your neighborhood, your park and your school that has a "thing."  And because of his "thing," he can’t afford a long summer off.  He needs to practice all year long. So, he’s getting pr…

Stepping Aside

It was a chilly, sun filled morning in New York City. A sedan was parked outside a swanky apartment building. One adult sat in the passenger seat while the other loaded a piece of luggage into the trunk. In the back seat, a small figure did his best to hide his tears as he waved goodbye to his mother.

Just You Wait

We mothers are united in an alternative universe.  There are knowing glances, simple nods and shocked expressions we exchange and only we fully comprehend their true meanings. We accurately predict sick calls from school based on eye glaze in the morning.  We can script an entire day based on the mood at the breakfast table.  And we have a miraculous ability to stay one step ahead even t…

Happy Mother's Day to Us

Mother's Day is upon us.  This means handmade cards.  Weak coffee.  Funky eggs.  And presents chosen with the heart and soul only found in children.   Over the years, I’ve acquired a black denim wallet, a brass plated “special mom” pin complete with green and red beads, a few necklaces and my now favorite coffee mug that still works even with the handle broken off.Â…

Your Friends and Your Kids

Here’s a dirty little secret only a super close friend can share with you.  She’s not really that interested in your kids.  It may sound harsh; but it’s true.
