It's always something...

Say Cheese!

I am occasionally lucky enough to have a day that is nearly perfect. On these days I may take the kids to the playground or the library in the morning, or a museum if I'm feeling extra ambitious.

Motherhood: The Perfect Contradiction

My three-year-old is going through an ornery phase right now. She wears her pants backwards just because I have explained that the tag belongs in the back. She drinks water when I know she really wanted milk only because I offered milk first. These are battles I could win, but choose not to fight. I find I am perfectly comfortable with my little contrary one and it occurs to me that this is becaus…

A bittersweet farewell

There are some baby products that can't help but elicit a love/hate relationship. Many toys fall into this category, toys that make you choose between a screaming baby and that song that will drive you absolutely insane if you have to listen to it one more time.

Planet Child

Have you explored Planet Child yet? Located at 305A Ashville Ave in Cary (near WakeMed), it looks small from the outside, but has more than enough space inside for your kids' imaginations to wander. Pretend play is widely encouraged with a model grocery store, pirate ship and kitchen (complete with ironing board which I should be embarrassed to say that my kids do not recognize).  There is also…

Of Ghosts and Princesses

My two older kids are dressing up as a ghost and a princess for Halloween again this year. If only it was as easy as that sounds.

That time of year again.

We haven't even carved our pumpkins yet and already I can't stop thinking about the holiday. Not the pumpkin holiday - the evergreen tree and sparkly lights holiday. I know a lot of people have begun their shopping, but that's only a small part of what's on my mind. (Though considering how close I cut it last year, perhaps it should be a bigger part.)

I fought the vacuum, and the vacuum won.

I have long hair. If you or anyone in your family does, too, you already know what this has to do with vacuuming. Long hair and vacuums are not a good mix. The hair on the floor gets tangled in the beater bar as it spins and quickly accumulates to a big hairy mess. You need to periodically tip the vacuum over and wrench, yank, cut or otherwise force the strands off the bar. This isn't pretty.

See Spot do commercials.

My first grader now has basic reading skills. I knew reading would open up a new world for him and I'm pretty excited that it's happening. I just didn't realize how much advertising would play a part in this world. He finds and reads words all over the place, and then he asks me to explain them. For example,

Any day now ...

In the very near future there is going to be a major shift in our household. I know it's coming because the babies have been "swimming" for a few weeks already. You know what baby swimming is, right?

Rubbernecking

There are some decisions that are unique to parents of twins. Fortunately, many of these are pretty straightforward. How long, for example, can you keep the babies in the same crib? The answer is obvious. When one baby can turn enough to start kicking the other in the head in the middle of the night, it's time to separate them.

It's always something...

Amanda grew up in a small town in northern Ohio.  It’s the kind of place where teachers accidentally called her by her sister’s name and even occasionally, her mother’s.  Even though Amanda has grown comfortable in Cary, ties to her hometown, where her father is currently Mayor, are still strong.

She moved to the Triangle when she got married in July of 1999 as her husband, D, had a job here.  She soon found work in a field she never knew existed, but gave up a paycheck when her first child was born in May of 2003.  Y got a little sister, J, in February 2006.  Exactly one day after J turned three, the household was blessed with twins, baby boy G and baby girl M.
