Sleeping Babies, Happy Mom

Our delightful editor, Sarah, recently sent me a new book about getting your twins to sleep.  It’s possible she thought one of my posts sounded a bit cranky.  Or she may have simply been trying to clean off her desk.  At any rate, I read the book, "Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Twins" by Marc Weissbluth, MD.

July 4 Curse

We're not giving up. Someday, our family will see a fantastic display of fireworks. But not this year. Taking two infants, a three-year-old who is afraid of air conditioning, and a six-year-old who wakes up at 6 a.m. NO MATTER WHAT to a late-night show of loud noises is not a good idea. And that’s fine. I’d be perfectly content to wait a year or two if we didn’t have such a history …

What's on your list?

I was thumbing through a magazine this morning and I came across an article on restaurants that were recommended for families with young children.  I confess I didn’t actually read this article, but the little icons caught my attention.  They had four little symbols to mark whether or not each restaurant had what I’m guessing must have been the primary rating criteria.  The firs…

For dads...

I felt the need to make an extra post today because I am offended on behalf of all the dads out there.  When Mother’s Day approached, the general impression from the media was that we should all be thanking mom for how great she is.  Mom deserves flowers and jewelry and praise.

Bedtime

With Father’s Day this weekend, my thoughts naturally turn to my dad. Since I wrote about mom for Mother’s Day, this only seems fair. So what can I say about my dad?

Awake without crying

My three-year-old mostly loves our new babies.  She loves to point out when they are looking at her and when they goo (spit-up) on themselves.  She even thinks it’s hilarious when their diapers goo on their jammies.  (I know, ewww.)  Lately though, her favorite thing seems to be pointing out whenever either of our babies is “awake without crying.”  She says it as thou…

There are no cookies!

Kids argue.  And siblings especially are prone to argue.  I know this.  They also argue about some of the stupidest things.  I have proof of this from my own childhood.  (By which I mean things my siblings argued about, not me of course.)  And while my two older kids play very nicely together for the most part, they do argue and they argue about stupid things.  Usually, I

Me + Sleep = Not Yet

This week I tried to think about what people might want to know about having twins, since that’s sort of my angle here.   The question I seem to get most from friends and family is: How bad is it?  The nights.  They want to know if I ever sleep.  People who have had to get up at night with one newborn want to know if getting up with two is as bad as they think it is.  The answe…

Eight Under Eight

I think it's time to admit that I’m old. It’s possible I’ve actually been old for a while. Now before you jump all over me for saying this at 32, (Yes, I am still young enough to freely acknowledge my age.) you should understand that I don’t mean “old” in the sense that normal people mean old. I mean I’ve reached my childhood definition of old, and then some.

Overwhelming Defeat

Mountains and mountains in every room I meet the mess with doom and gloom Where to begin on the piles and stacks I stand back a moment to plan the attacks Tired but determined and armed with soap I begin making progress and find reason to hope Three loads in and my progress is stunning But I need to hurry it’s already running One more item will fill up the whites I decide there’s no reas…

It's always something...

Amanda grew up in a small town in northern Ohio.  It’s the kind of place where teachers accidentally called her by her sister’s name and even occasionally, her mother’s.  Even though Amanda has grown comfortable in Cary, ties to her hometown, where her father is currently Mayor, are still strong.

She moved to the Triangle when she got married in July of 1999 as her husband, D, had a job here.  She soon found work in a field she never knew existed, but gave up a paycheck when her first child was born in May of 2003.  Y got a little sister, J, in February 2006.  Exactly one day after J turned three, the household was blessed with twins, baby boy G and baby girl M.
