Quotes from Mom

I think we all have things we remember our mothers saying over and over, sometimes to us and sometimes about us. There might be a specific quote you hoped you’d never hear yourself say and there might be a few words of wisdom that you really would like to pass to your own children. And in my case, mom occasionally said things that just make me laugh. In honor of Mother’s Day, I

Hey Look! Twins!

Out with the old

Mommy's got a brand new bag. A diaper bag, that is. This was a significant purchase for me. Not in terms of money. I picked it up at Target for less than it usually costs us to have dinner out. But since the bag is something I use almost daily and carry with me everywhere, it is a considerable change in my routine.

Nursing a Neurosis

How does a woman breastfeed twins? I’ve been doing it for nearly two months and I’m still not sure I have it completely figured out. I’m beginning to think some form of X-ray vision might help. I did some research before my babies were born. The “expert” advice made it seem simple enough. All you have to do is nurse baby A on one side while baby B nurses on the other a…

Adventures in Dining

My parents were married on Veterans’ Day.  This past November marked 36 years together. When I was growing up, they celebrated each anniversary by taking the family to the American Legion for dinner.  (My father is a Vietnam Vet.)  Those dinners consisted of beef stew and ice cream.  Can you guess which, as a child, I hated?  For several years, I wouldn’t even taste the st…

The Nap Thief

I'm not getting much sleep these days. My beautiful new babies are doing very well, which means that they are eating … a lot. They are nursing about ten times a day… each. Other moms know that when I say how many times a day an infant eats, I don’t really mean "day," I mean within a 24 hour period that occasionally includes more night than actual day.

Waiting for chaos ...

I really didn't spend a lot of time thinking about the first few days with twins. Perhaps I was afraid of scaring myself and perhaps I had a feeling how fruitless attempts to plan ahead might be. Mostly I figured we’d come home with two babies and endure days or maybe weeks (I’m optimistic) of chaos and then settle into a routine. I did not expect limbo.

Hi Moms (and Dads)

I'm pregnant. Since this is my first “official” post for Mom2Mom, I thought I should explain a bit about who I am. And because I am weeks (if not days) from delivery, that’s pretty much the first thing that comes to mind when I describe myself. This is my third pregnancy. While every baby is a miracle, every pregnancy is not. Those nine months are necessary the first time. It gives …

Car seat vs carpool

It used to be a firm rule in our family that the car doesn’t move until everyone is buckled and no one gets unbuckled until the car is in park.  But lately we’ve been making almost daily exceptions and I’m still not sure how I feel about it.

Tales from the road.

Even when everything goes well, a long road trip with young children doesn’t rank very high on anyone’s fun scale. My husband and I have family in Indiana and Ohio. We’ve made the long drive to one or the other or both many times since becoming parents and figuring out the best way to visit family with the least amount of mental pain has been an evolving process.

It's always something...

Amanda grew up in a small town in northern Ohio.  It’s the kind of place where teachers accidentally called her by her sister’s name and even occasionally, her mother’s.  Even though Amanda has grown comfortable in Cary, ties to her hometown, where her father is currently Mayor, are still strong.

She moved to the Triangle when she got married in July of 1999 as her husband, D, had a job here.  She soon found work in a field she never knew existed, but gave up a paycheck when her first child was born in May of 2003.  Y got a little sister, J, in February 2006.  Exactly one day after J turned three, the household was blessed with twins, baby boy G and baby girl M.
