Hazardous to Your Health?

I got an e-mail last week from the state Office of Environmental Education. They thought they were doing me a favor by introducing me to their new Eco-Smart Parent Guide, a cheerily written pamphlet designed to promote healthier choices when it comes to your children. What they didn’t know is that I’m already a basket case attempting to safeguard my kids from, well, the world in general…

Grateful

Perhaps the best part of Mother's Day was the drive home. We'd been in Fayetteville, spending the day with my parents. The kids were in pajamas, exhausted from a late night the evening before. I was at the wheel. We pulled out of my parents' driveway at 6:35 p.m. By 6:45, everyone — my husband included — was asleep. For 45 blissful minutes, as the sun streaked the sky pink, I drove in si…

Go For a Hike

My family went on a hike yesterday. At least we tried. Just preparing to leave the house can be exhausting.

Not Listening

In our house, the dinosaurs are not extinct. I know this from personal experience. We have a hates-to-take-her-medicine-o-saurus (the baby), a whine-o-saurus (big sis) and a don’t-like-to-listen-o-saurus (big bro). Judging by the intensity with which he ignores instructions, I’d have to say my son’s got the chops to go head to head with any Tyrannosaurus Rex. He just doesn’t li…

Breast or Bottle

There are few topics as guaranteed to stoke the passions of motherhood as breastfeeding. Breast or bottle, in some circles, is like offering a choice between organic ambrosia and a poisonous brew. I don’t buy into that. Breastfeeding is a deeply personal undertaking with no right or wrong choice. I truly believe that. But for me, it was the only choice.

Respect Your Elders?

Respect your elders is one of my favorite maxims these days. Not that you’d know it from the level of parent-child discourse in my house. My husband and I find ourselves in a battle of attrition against the “whatever” rejoinder. Did I mention it’s coming from the mouth of a 5-year-old? Us: “If you don’t fish out the dirty underwear you’ve stuffed between your bed…

Working for a Living ... some of the time

Featured blogger Bonnie Rochman appears every Monday. Do you work? Three words. Nine letters, each a weapon in the mommy war. The question always makes me bristle. The audacity! The abject cluelessness! I'm careful to phrase it differently when it issues from my mouth, whether I've just met a new mom at the park or I'm interviewing someone in my job as a reporter.

Bonnie Rochman

Bonnie is a TriangleMom2Mom featured blogger, appearing every Monday.

She lives in Raleigh and has written for The News & Observer since 1998. She has covered political unrest in the Middle East and chronicled the experiences of entrepreneurs in Vietnam, but that was long before her new bosses -- there are three of them, one more demanding than the next -- presenting her with her most challenging assignment to date: juggling the needs and perceived wants of boy/girl preschoolers and their baby sister.

Bonnie also writes kids music reviews for TriangleMom2Mom.
