I'm Done

No more tiny socks or itty bitty hats. No more onesies, burp clothes, or blanket swaddlers. The high chair and swing are gone, the breast pump is packed, and my maternity clothes were donated months ago. My baby making days are nearly finished. After I did the heavy lifting for 18 months to produce two beautiful children who make my heart smile every day, my husband has a doctor’s appointmen…

Secret Agent 23 Skidoo

My husband and I, lazily, have made no effort to censor our music selection now that we have kids. That can pose a problem at times, especially because we listen to a lot of hip hop in our house. Thankfully, we’ve found a solution: Special Agent 23 Skidoo’s debut children’s hip hop album, “Easy.” “Easy” is pure fun for kids and entertaining for adults. The album …

It's Tuesday!

Ahh, Tuesdays. I love Tuesdays. Most people live for the weekend, but I wait eagerly for Tuesday to come. Why? It’s the first of two peaceful days of the week at my house. On Tuesdays, my 4-year-old son goes to preschool, for the entire day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If I try to pick him up any sooner, he usually is disappointed because he loves playing with his friends on the sprawling playground ou…

The First Sleepover

Guillermo and I survived his first sleepover, barely, but we did, with only a few tears along the way. Not bad for a pair of 4 year olds. My friend and I planned our kids’ first sleepover and the plan called for me sleeping over too. She has a guest room and we figured it might make the sleepover a little easier on Guillermo. Plus, it would be a great chance for us to catch up.

The Confident Sarah Palin

I have a lot of opinions, as do moms across the country, about John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate, but what I come back to every time is that she is the mother of five, FIVE, kids.

Sibling Love

Shortly after my son, Guillermo, was born four years ago, a friend told me he was so glad his daughter came first and then his son. His daughter, he said, couldn’t wait to help take care of her baby brother. His son, on the other hand, had not a maternal bone in his body. I know the feeling.

I've Got the Blues

Jeron Ashford Frame wrote a book a few years ago called "Yesterday I had the Blues." The book tells the story of a young boy who describes the emotions of his family members with different colors. It’s one of our favorites and for this blog, I’ve borrowed generously from Frame’s idea for the story because I have the blues.

Second Best

I've been knocked off my throne. I’ve seen it coming for some time, but it’s become more clear over this past month: I’m no longer my 4-year-old son’s favorite person in the whole entire world. My husband has replaced me as Guillermo’s best friend ever.

Brutal Honesty

Children are brutally honest, my mother says. And she’s right, especially on the brutal part. How do you teach them, then, that sometimes it’s better just to keep their thoughts to themselves even if they don’t think what they are saying is mean? Can you teach a 4-year-old what’s rude and what’s not?

Superhero Dilemma

A few years ago, when my 4-year-old son was 2, my parents gave him two capes. One was a Superman cape and the other one was a Batman cape. Guillermo was elated. I don’t think he even knew who Superman was, but he immediately put on the red cape, which nearly reached the floor on his short body, and took off flying around the room. The four adults in the room took turns wearing the Batman cape…
