Best Weekend Bets: Music for Aardvarks, a storyboo…

The Triangle Down Syndrome Network is bringing a popular kids band that appears on the cable channel Noggin to Raleigh on Sunday for its 11th annual Buddy Walk.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread

Pumpkins are filling up the stalls at farmers markets, which is one reason why the State Farmers Market will hold its Great Pumpkin Contest this Thursday. I've always wanted to be a little bit more adventurous with my use of pumpkin, but have never quite gotten past the basics of pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread. But this recipe is an old standby I use all the time when I have to bring a dessert some…

Election day and kids

It's Election Day in Raleigh and other communities across the Triangle (you read that right. Seats on local councils and board of commissioners are up for election today. Read more about it and find your precinct here).

Best Weekend Bets: International festival, Railroa…

We've got about a week before Halloween events really take over the calendar. But there's still a lot to do this weekend ... The International Festival at Raleigh's Convention Center runs Friday through Sunday and includes Sophie's Corner with face painting, storytelling, games and other activities for kids. Kids 12 and under also are free.

Meet Jane!

Jane Ball is the TriangleMom2Mom mom of the week. She's involved with the Triangle Down Syndrome Network, which will be holding its 11th annual Buddy Walk on Oct. 11 at Brier Creek. Take your kids outside this week

Take a Child Outside Week starts today and runs through Sept. 30. It aims to encourage adults to take kids outdoors. It was started by the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences a few years ago and now is celebrated across North America. I wrote earlier this month about the week to highlight some of the local programs, which mostly require registration.   But you don't have to sign up for all the even…

Apple time

I'm a firm believer in the old apple a day adage. And apple season might just be my favorite time at the State Farmers Market. I love tasting all the different kinds. My favorite are the really crisp, tart versions, including honeycrisp, mutsu and pink lady. North Carolina ranks seventh in apple production in the United States. And this Thursday is Apple Day at the market.
