Best Weekend Bets: Harvest fun, They Might Be Gian…

Historic Yates Mill County Park will host its fourth annual From Field to Food: A Harvest Celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, which drew about 1,200 people last year, is the three-year-old park’s biggest event of the year, said Rebeccah Cope, park manager.

Sweet Potato recipes

North Carolina produces about 40 percent of the nation's sweet potatoes. So it seems just about right that the State Farmers Market would have a Sweet Potato Day each year. This year, it's Thursday. I'm a big fan of the sweet potato, though I think I'm about the only one in my house. In the last days of my second pregnancy, I'd crave them. An easy way to cook one up quickly is to stick a potato a …

Lunch box rut

The folks at Be Active North Carolina answer monthly questions for us on health and fitness. Here they field a qustion from a mom in a lunch rut. Q. I'm in a lunch rut. Can you share some healthy lunch box ideas?

Meet Karin!

Best Weekend Bets: Literary festival for kids, Bug…

The fifth N.C. Literary Festival will be held this weekend at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And for the first time, it will include a large area dedicated to young readers ages 12 and under.

2009 Triangle Halloween Guide

Budget cuts have taken a bit of the bite out of area Halloween celebrations. But we've still got more than 60 Halloween events on the TriangleMom2Mom calendar from the BOO at the N.C. Zoo to Natural History Halloween at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences to a host of other big and small celebrations across the Triangle.

Thank you everybody!

Finally getting the time to check in! It's still a bit surreal that there's a baby in the house (except when it's 3 a.m. and she's crying. Then it is very real). But we're all doing great and big sister is very excited to have the little sister she's been hoping for during the last nine months. Baby sis isn't a bad sleeper and so far has been pretty easy (though I've probably just jinxed myself).…

Grape and sunflower seed salad

It's Grape Day at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh on Friday. And while my favorite use of the grape is wine, my No. 2 pick for the fruit is this salad. There's a little nostalgia involved. It was the salad that was served at my wedding reception at the beautiful Linklaen House in Cazenovia, N.Y., eight years ago. This year, I recreated the salad on the big day for dinner.

When to start chapter books

This weekend is the N.C. Literary Festival at UNC-Chapel Hill. And this year the festival will include a big area for kids, including readings from some very popular authors (the authors of Goosebumps and Skippyjon Jones among them), crafts and visits from popular children's characters.
